SUBMITTING AN ARTICLE FOR CONSIDERATION

Submissions may be in any language; please include a 250-word abstract in English. It must not have been previously published in print or online. As a general guideline, the average article length is between 6,000 and 8,000 words. Articles should be accompanied by a list of illustrations (captions), a Microsoft Word file no larger than 10 MB containing all illustrations, and a biographical statement of no more than 60 words. Due to the strict nature of the double-blind peer-review process, it is essential to remove any information that would identify you as the author, both from your text and from the notes. Your name should appear only on a separate cover page, along with contact information. The title of the article, but not the author’s name, should be repeated on the first page of the text.

The submission should include:

  • The manuscript, all elements of which must be double line-spaced (including notes and captions), and which should not mention the author’s name.
  • A PDF or Word document of less than 10MB in size containing the images.
  • A cover sheet with author’s name, a sixty-word biographical statement, postal and e-mail addresses, and the word count of the entire submission including endnotes and all other elements.

SUBMITTING AN ARTIST’S PROJECT FOR CONSIDERATION

Proposals for an artist’s project or portfolio should comprise a one-page written description, ten to twenty sample images or other media, and a short artist bio. If an original artwork for Art Journal is proposed, please send samples of comparable work. Include details of medium and format, along with complete caption information.

IMAGES

Photographs and scans of all images (with caption information) should be in the author’s possession when a manuscript is submitted for consideration. If the manuscript is accepted, the author will need to supply high-resolution images promptly. CAA encourages authors to to employ fair use for third-party works in copyright according to the principles and limitations outlined in CAA’s Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for the Visual Arts. It is the responsibility of the author to determine whether or not fair use may be invoked for third-party materials (authors will still need to obtain permission for third-party works that are not utilized under fair use).
